Alfred

ALFRED and the feminine forms ALFREDA and ELVA are from the Anglo-Saxon and mean elf counsel or wise helper. In ancient times elves were held to be wee, supernatural beings of great wisdom who provided mortals with good advice. In ancient Hawaii the elfin folk are known as MENEHUNE. The menehune, or little people, performed good deeds for mortals, but only at night when they could not be seen. The Hawaiian word for an able counselor was PHOKANO.
