and the feminine forms BERNADINE and BERNADETTE are all from the Teutonic and mean stern bear or resolute commander. The bear, the largest and strongest animal in Northern Europe, was regarded in ancient times as sacred. The Hawaiian word 'ALIHIKAUA means commander in battle.
